In a significant move for the Indian cricket team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to allow family members to accompany players during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. This marks a notable change from the board’s previous stance, which had imposed strict restrictions on players bringing their families during overseas tours.

Relaxed Rules for Family Members

The decision comes as a relief for senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have often been away from their families for extended periods. Following the Indian team’s disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the BCCI had previously enforced stricter policies regarding family presence on tours.

Under the new policy, players will be allowed to have their families present for just one match during the Champions Trophy. To ensure smooth coordination, team members will need to communicate with each other and submit their requests to the BCCI, which will facilitate the necessary arrangements.

History of Family Restrictions

The BCCI had enforced a more rigid policy in the past, permitting family members to stay with players for only two weeks during long overseas tours lasting more than 45 days. On shorter tours, the presence of family members was entirely prohibited. However, the board has now relaxed these rules in recognition of the support that family members provide, especially during high-pressure events like the Champions Trophy.

Ensuring Professionalism and Efficiency

While the relaxation is welcomed by players, the BCCI has made it clear that professional standards and operational efficiency must be maintained during the tournament. The board emphasized that any deviations from the policy must be pre-approved by the Chairman of the Selection Committee and the Head Coach. Failure to comply with these guidelines could lead to disciplinary action.

The BCCI also stated that players could face sanctions for non-compliance, including suspension from BCCI-conducted tournaments, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), and deductions from retainer fees and match payments.

Looking Ahead: India’s Champions Trophy Matches

India’s campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025 will begin with a match against Bangladesh on February 20. They will then face Pakistan on February 23, followed by New Zealand on March 2. With the new family policy in place, Indian players can now focus more on their performance with the added support of their loved ones by their side during the tournament.
